• What is Chillhop?

Chillhop is a quite popular, yet pretty new genre of electronic music known for its relaxed and calming atmosphere. It blends elements of hip-hop, like laid-back beats and funky basslines, with smooth melodies and jazzy samples. I believe (and I am not alone with that) this combination makes chillhop perfect background music for activities like studying, working, or simply unwinding.

    History in Short

Chillhop’s roots can be traced back to the early 1990s, when genres like downtempo and acid jazz laid the groundwork. Pioneering artists like Nujabes, J Dilla, and the now-iconic Lofi Girl (a popular YouTube channel known for its chillhop live streams) helped shape the genre into what it is today.

What are the Key Characteristics of Chillhop?

I believe a signature chillhop sound is all about creating a relaxed vibe. Regardless of how you achieve it.

I mean, I tend to use laid-back beats: Often featuring simple (acoustic) drum loops with a focus on creating a steady groove rather than complex percussion. Also, I make sure to lower the tempo, there is no need to rush. I rather to instrumental over featuring vocals (if so and rarely, then I use chops and snippets instead of complex and distracting vocals).

Smooth melodies: Chillhop melodies can come from various sources, like keyboards, samples, or even vocals that are chopped and looped to create a soothing effect. As mentioned above, I am in favor for keyboards as I learned them as a kid. I live using both electric piano and organ chords to boost the vibe.

Lastly, jazzy samples: Samples from jazz records are a staple in chillhop, adding a touch of sophistication and warmth to the music. Essentially, be mindful from a copyright perspective!

    Chillhop Subgenres

Chillhop has spawned a variety of subgenres, each with its own twist. They are commonly mixed up due to not too many differences (in my point of view). But again, the further we go in and more artists feature and produce more beats, the more clear these lines will become.

A few (sub-)genres to mind in connection with chillhop:

Lofi: This subgenre incorporates elements of lo-fi aesthetics, often characterized by a slightly muffled or “dusty” sound.

Jazzhop: As the name suggests, jazzhop leans even heavier on jazz influences, incorporating more complex harmonies and improvisation.

Downtempo: This subgenre focuses on slower tempos and a more chilled-out atmosphere.

Hip-hop & Electronic: These subgenres emphasize the respective influences more prominently, creating a sound that’s closer to traditional hip-hop or electronic music with a chillhop twist.

Click on the links above to read my articles on the different genres. I promise I am doing my best to broaden the list of “wiki” type articles in the future.

Summing it up: chillhop’s versatility and ability to create a calming atmosphere make it a popular choice for background music. With its diverse subgenres and ever-evolving sound, chillhop is sure to continue captivating listeners for years to come.

This Japanese electronic music producer is renowned for his unique blend of lounge, hip-hop, and nu-jazz, creating tracks that are both undeniably catchy and effortlessly relaxing. I believe it is perfect for unwinding after a long day or setting the mood for a chill evening.

He was born in Shizuoka, Japan on the 28th of November in 1989 (wow, in fact, he is younger than me!). DJ Okawari’s musical journey began in the early 2000s. With a background in hip-hop and a love for all things soulful, his sound quickly evolved into the signature blend of laid-back beats, atmospheric keyboard melodies, and soulful samples that have garnered him a loyal following worldwide.

So, put on your headphones, brew a cup of your favorite tea, and dive into my picks for the top 5 DJ Okawari tracks that will have you swaying to the rhythm in no time:

    Flower Dance

I believe his first song that actually drove me Shazam-ing it immediately. A lovely beat I listen to over and over again.

    Mirage

Released on the Compass album in the past couple of years (2020 if I recall it well). I believe the vibe is pretty similar. A catchy song I listen to on my unwind playlist quite often.

    Perfect Blue

The title song from the album with the same title. Given it is a title song, it is probably the best beat from that release. Though this is a subjective opinion, I wish you all give this chill song a spin. By the way, kudos to Marumiyan as well for all the beautiful, anime-themed, yet mystical covers. I simply love them.

    Voice of Nature

Another beauty from the Perfect Blue album, which was released in 2019.

    After the Wind

A unique, yet different beat blending the past with some new elements. Still offering that “Okawari”-style, you are now all aware of. I love the beat, I hope you will like it as well.

Inspired by DJ Okawari – Solace On

One of my beats, released in 2023, which was inspired by my trip to Tokyo and influenced by his music. Check Pearl LP for more beats. I hope you enjoyed this little article. Read more about DJ Okawari here. Support him by spinning his songs and sharing his beats.

  • Lofi Decorations and Chill Vibes for Your Space

Decorate your room lofi-style and maximize the cozy vibe. Is it possible? Let us give it a go in this article on lofi decorations.

How to decorate your room Lofi?

When it comes to lofi spaces, there are a few styles that create that perfect atmosphere. You may consider Vintage Vibes. In this case think of a record player, worn leather chairs, and maybe even a framed cassette tape. Looking vibey already, right? You can get most second-hand at a flea market next Saturday.

Earthy Elements – another option: bring in some nature with houseplants (a cactus?), wooden furniture, and calming textures. Think of a wooden table with a comfy chair, or similar. With regards to plants, I like Ikea, it is relatively cheap and you can easily find some nearby.

Soft & dreamy colors around you. Pastel colors, fairy lights, and comfy throws create a truly relaxing space. I am a fan of white walls and wooden furniture that gives a light (colored) vibe to the room, let alone enhances the space (so it feels), but this is up to one and each I guess.

Last, but not least: photography. Having some photos hung out can change the aura of your room. I am a fan of Instax films and occasionally I take my camera on a trip and enjoy my time as an amateur lofi photographer.

Summing it up, Lofi decorations focus on the vibe. There is no clear resolution to this question but more like working on making your space more comfy. If you are a book fan, a shelf and set of books is your solution. If you are a photo maniac, a wall with photos will bring you the warmth you seek for. I would suggest grabbing a warm mug of coffee, please some dope (Latte Chill – lol) lofi beats and coming up with ideas.
