Bebop 2 (demo)

Why Bebop 2 (demo)?

I started working on my space chill beats series with Bebop I. based on the first 6 episodes of the famous anime, Cowboy Bebop. The second EP came faster than expected and even though I was very happy with many of the beats I composed (e.g. Jamming with Edward) at the end the big picture did not satisfy me as much as expected, so I added the demo as a tag and populated the album with all the songs I composed in this era.

Genre: space chill, experimental beats

An interesting 9th album on the list of my chill releases. Interesting as I composed most of the songs on my old Korg Triton LE61 keyboard (unlike the previous albums such as Year 2017, Café Yami or Raw Disco Unit). It is also considered to be quite unique as Earth project was taking my focus in the early days of 2018, when I finished the beats for Bebop 2 demo. Earth was roughly 70% ready by then. At the end I decided to add this one to my release roadmap and it should be released before Earth saga. I felt like winter mood is fitting Bebop 2 demo more, whereas spring will offer a boost to the more warm and acoustic mixed Earth album.

As for the preparations: Bebop I. set the story off: I watched a Cowboy Bebop episode, chilled down and composed a song. I used the same method to compose this EP, however I made an attempt to remove stock beats and came up with own ones from scratch. Well. I believe it worked fine by Earth already and on, but this one was really a demo album.

To be honest. I even reworked this space chill album as an EP later with a featuring artist and released under Bebop II.

My favourite songs from Bebop 2 (demo)

Venus Waltz (demo)
Jamming with Edward (demo)
Jupiter Jazz (demo)
Spike’s Prairie Oyster (demo)

Venus Waltz is one of my fave songs from the album. It has been quite long since I last played the piano raw. So no beats, no effects, no chords, arps whatsoever. Just jamming. I am quite fond of this demo piece.

Jamming with Edward is another example, what can I do alone at home with a good wine. The episode of the anime is introducing a new character who is quite weird (almost crazy), therefore I added tempo to this piano chill beats and an upbeat beat sequence.

Jupiter Jazz (and Ganymede Elegy) offers the true bitter sweet vibe of the anime using some minor chords, slow beats, sax and reverb offering a space ambient chill beat to the listeners.

Spike’s Prairie Oyster on the other hand is a warm vibe mid-tempo song based on his fave cocktail from Heavy Metal Queen episode, if I recall it well.

About Bebop 2 (demo) songs

heavy metal queen
The first song of the album, where I intended to offer a mid-tempo vibe. I wanted the song to fit into my “Latte Chill” vibe but I also needed to consider that this episode of Cowboy Bebop anime is quite heavy (lame pun). But really, full of action, fast scene changes, space trucks and much more. In a way it might not be the best idea to start with, but at the end the whole concept of the album was to follow the episodes of the series, therefore not challenging the topics and their orders.

venus waltz
Venus Waltz is already a different matter. A piano solo song, fully jammed on my old Korg Triton LE61. I cannot fully remember now but I recorded this song instantly in once cut, or almost one cut. Meaning that this is more an improvisation than a long recorded and mixed song. At the end it is getting more and more understandable to me either why I ended up adding the “demo” tag to Bebop 2 (demo) album.

jamming with edward
One of my fave beats from this demo album. Not entirely space chill, more a mid-tempo happy melody sketch I recorded almost one cut on my Korg Triton LE61 back in 2018. The song intended to be a bit goofy like Edward herself (yes her) in Cowboy Bebop anime. Since then I guess it is a song I used the most times in videos and lives due to the vibe it has. Listen to Jamming with Edward with love and let me know on any of my social channels what do you think about this song.

Slower songs again from the album

ganymede elegy
Slowing down after mid tempo. Ganymede Elegy is of the songs perfectly fitting Cowboy Bebop anime OST. Sax, mellow piano and slow beats. I had my limits back then using free VSTs only not even knowing where to look for. Still I liked this song along with Jupiter Jazz. I didn’t even touch these songs much later, when I reworked them on Bebop II.

toys in the attic
Fifth song is Toys in the Attic on Bebop 2 demo album. A slow, kind of sad sketch I composed as one of the firsts when I was working on this album. A truly piano beat song with reverb to create space vibe for the listeners.

jupiter jazz
Originally this song meant to be the last one of this EP. But… I ended up reproducing Toys in the Attic completely as I was unhappy with the first version – so I decided to add the first under Toys and also composed some more songs in order to create a space chill album instead of an EP with single B-side songs. Jupiter Jazz, as mentioned before, is kind of the brother of Ganymede Elegy, a sax and piano based short sketch, almost like a lofi song. A beat that is more bittersweet than your whisky on the rocks in your hand. A song I guess fitting Cowboy Bebop vibe perfectly.

Non-anime title based songs from the album

toys
Originally titled Toys in the Attic, but I felt like this song is not expressing the vibe I wished to, after watching the anime episode titled the same. So I composed a new song instead and added this song as an extra demo beat on Bebop 2 demo album.

spike’s prairie oyster
A surprisingly warm welcome song. I mean as it is not titled as any of the Cowboy Bebop anime episodes, it was destined to be a b-side song. Yet, it ended up being liked by people I talked to. Warm vibe, bit like a good and affordable dinner after a hard day with your pals.

la fin
La fin, the end. End of the album – 9 songs. Space chill sketches from the vault inspired by one of my fave anime: Cowboy Bebop. La fin is really nothing more but an easy going song that ends the album.

About Bebop 2 (demo) extra songs

jamming with edward (original)
Now this one is a bit difficult to describe. Originally I composed songs using sampled beats (same way as all Bebop EPs) as I was unaware that this EP will be ending up as an album. However in case albums back then I focused a lot on putting together the beats as well on my own. So when I made the decision that I would be delegating these space lofi sketches as #9, I needed to rework the songs. Some were almost ready by then (mixing, recording), so I chose 2 of them and added as extra song under “original” or better call it “original demo” versions. Of course Jamming with Edward was on top of my list.

toys in the attic (original)

Last but not least: Toys in the Attic original demo version. Same as above, a song I created, mixed – almost finished and yet I reworked later. I put it as part of the release to the end instead of B-side single song as I felt this chill out beat already had more.

If you liked Bebop 2 (demo)

bebop 2 space chill

Clearly Bebop II. is the first to mentioned as this is the space chill EP, where I literally finished my sketches from the album. This one sounds more mature and many of the songs are pretty much reworked so do not expect the same thing after listening to Bebop 2 demo.

As the Sun Sets chill EP by Latte Chill

As the Sun Set nature chill beats EP was born pretty close to Bebop 2 demo beats, clearly there is a connection between the 2 of them. Mix-wise and instrument-wise either. Worth checking this one out to see how two different genres of chill releases may connect to each other due to similar instruments. Hence the different effects and sentiment.

winter fruits

Lastly Winter Fruits. An EP released years later inspired by old demos composed with fellow musician pal during my rock band era. What makes it similar? The mix of piano focus and minimal beats.
