  • What is Lofi House?

Ever wondered what lofi house is? As expected it has a strong connection to lofi quality, what’s more to lofi music as well (what a surprise!). But then what makes it different?

So what exactly lofi house is?

According to this page, lofi house (or Lo-Fi House) is a less well-known genre of lofi that can be described as listening to music played at a nightclub from the outside. Which is fairly OK for a starting point.

If you investigate this matter a bit further, you will find that lo-fi house is a subgenre of house music. Essentially it incorporates elements of lo-fi (low-fidelity) production as linked above. In action, it means noises such as tape hiss, crackles, and background noise can be part of the songs.

The use of vintage and analog equipment also characterizes this subgenre. So cool DJs and producers with old drum machines, synthesizers, and samplers you need to think about. Of course, that description also stands for lofi hip-hop right? Anyways, the point is, that these instruments can create a warm and nostalgic sound.

On the other hand lo-fi house often incorporates elements of funk, disco, and soul music. It makes this genre more upbeat and danceable than the general so-called lofi beats that are more a café vibe focus music. Still, the beats are usually simple and a bit repetitive, with a focus on the use of samples and grooves.

    Summing up

In short, lofi house is a subgenre of house music that has its elements from lofi music. To my point of view it fairly incorporates elements of vintage and analog equipment, furthermore, funk, disco, and occasionally soul music. It offers a laid-back, groovy feel with simple and repetitive beats and the use of samples.

About Year of Tiger mix (electronic edition)

I used up to 14 albums and EPs during the creation of the mix. I have pad beats from Aurora EP. It was followed by some chiptune beats from Soul Silver. Lo-fi house is also a recent fave genre of mine. I was experimenting with beats from Urban Lo-fi and City Lo-fi EPs as well. Respecting the past I also added a few beats from 2009 releases. It includes Y album, The Empire and Dragonic Eve as well.

It is rare I choose songs from my electro experimental album, Raw Disco Unit. However, I felt like Year of Tiger mix is one to use this release from 2011. I also chose a song from Year 2017. Fun fact that the mix features my monthly challenge beat from February. And I am to release this mix by the start of the Lunar New Year, which is also in February.

I had some beats from Memories of the Untold album from 2010. From Earth album as well from 2018. Lastly an upbeat cover song from Darkest Cherry EP. The final lo-fi songs for Year of Tiger mix were chosen from Sapphire and Ultra Sun. Both were released in 2021 and produced with PO-33.

Also follow my Youtube channel for more mixes and travel videos. I try to update it regularly. Usually I share instrumental beats and mixes, no talks. I have Twitter and Instagram as well. Milan Melody is the first song from City Lo-fi EP. A lofi house release I uploaded for every stream platform by 12th November in 2021. All songs were composed and performed on Pocket Operator 33 KO by Teenage Engineering and recorded live. I enhanced overall sound with DAW after the record but made no further edit.

    Tracklist
    00:00 Milan Melody
    02:25 Amsterdam Funk
    04:19 Prague Parade
    06:29 Bucharest Blues

You can listen to the complete EP above. But you may also find all songs on Spotify, Apple Music and other stream platforms.

The song was inspired by my journey to Italy, the photo was taken in the city I composed the song about. It may look a bit old – but due to recent lock downs I travel rarely. I use old photos from the vault to show you the vibe of the song. Even before clicking on it.

Of course feel free to visit my page for more chill mixes if you prefer that. I upload mixes, beats – even lives time to time. I often release chill albums as well such as Ultra Sun or Wabi-Sabi. City Lo-fi is more a rare thing as it is more house than chill. Though in case you love them, I will produce more beats like that. So do not hesitate to reach out and tell me your honest opinion. Any constructive feedback are more than welcome.
